After You Buy Tires Online ...

Just wanted to throw out a quick tip.  After you go ahead and Buy Tires Online, don't forget to go to your new tire's manufactuer site and register them. 

This helps them contact you for any reason they need to contact you, but most importantly in case there is a recall on your tires.

No Sales Tax

Another point I wanted to quickly tell you about when you Buy Tires Online is that you pay no sales tax.

That actually could be quite a bit of savings.  Everyone's I talk to personally will always bring up one point.  "Man the shipping has to be a killer."  If don't take into account that you are already saving a ton of money just by buying from places like The Tire Rack you can still see how, for example, not spending 8% on taxes could offset easily the price of shipping.  If you buy tires that cost $100 each, that's $400 total.  You're saving around $32 in taxes.

A lot of people don't even realize that they save that amount when they buy tires online, because not many people add on the tax when they talk about how much they spent.  Ask someone how much each tire cost them and its almost guarunteed they'll tell you the pretax amount.  But even if people don't talk about it, that savings is still there if you buy tires online as opposed to at a local store.

Buy Tires Online - Spec Numbers

I was doing my usual research in how to Buy Tires Online and found this over at discount-tire-company.com


Ever wonder what the spec code on yor tires really meant? Well according to the discount-tire-company this is what it means.

  1. The first spot represents the type of vehicle. P for passenger cars and LT for light trucks and SUV’s
  2. The second spot number(185 in this example) is the tire cross-section width in millimeters
  3. The third spot (60 in this example) is the aspect ratio: The tire sidewall height to the cross-section width. For a smoother ride, choose this number to be bigger. A smaller number here gives a crisper handling.
  4. The fourth spot is the max speed rating
    • H = 130 miles per hour
    • Q = 99 miles per hour
    • S = 112 miles per hour
    • T = 118 miles per hour
    • v = 149 miles per hour
    • Z = 150 miles per hour
  5. R in the fifth spot means that it’s a radial-ply tire. Other choices here are D (diagonal) or B (belted bias). If this spot has no letter at all, it means that it is a radial-ply tire.
  6. And the final number is the diameter of the tire hole in inches. A point to note that this is NOT the outer diameter. So if you were looking for a rim/wheel to fit on a 14″ tire, you would pick the rim/wheel to be 14″ as well.
  7. Sometimes, there is an additional number at the end. (E.g. P185/60HR14 89). This last number represents a load index. The bigger this number, the more the load the tire can safely carry. When replacing your tire, make sure that the new tire has at least the same load index as what you had before.

Buy Tires Online My Brother's Way

It truely was my brother who originally told me to Buy Tires Online.  In fact I was talking to him yesterday after he just got a set of tires.  He told me he spent $5 to get them mounted.  $5!!!  That meant he saved $20 PER tire.

Buy Tires Online - Take Them To Walmart

A big concern when you Buy Tires Online I keep hearing about is that you don't get free rotations or allignments.

Say you buy tires from Amazon and get them sent to your house.  You can take them over to any walmart to get them installed, which does cost money.  However, you get life time rotation/alignment from Walmart and you still spend less money if you just went to walmart or any other tire store to start off with.

Why You Save When You Buy Tires Online

Here's a few reasons on why online tire companies can save you money when you buy tires online.

1)   They can buy in greater bulk.
2)   Most aren't brick & mortar stores; less overhead and some places then don't pay taxes.  I'm just thinking 8% on a $300 sale is $24 right off the top you don't pay.
3)   Most focus on internet sales, meaing less employees; again meaning less overhead.

I can think of another possible reason, but I'm not going to put it on my list.  I think that when large online tire companies look for local stores to fit the tires for them, they MIGHT be able to get those fitting costs lowered, saving you money in the end.

Can't really be too sure on that last one, but the first three are the real big reasons.

Just another reason to buy tires online.

More People To Buy Tires Online

While I was looking at some stats about people who buy tires online I came across something we all hate to think about.

Oil Prices!

I never really thought about it this way before, but the oil price crisis is infact driving up the cost of tires.  Three fold actually.

1)   The oil that goes into making the tire
2)   The oil that is used to heat/cool the production plant
3)   And finally, the oil that goes into the shipping of the tires.

That's why I seriously want you guys to consider if you want to buy tires online.  As gas prices rise, so will tire prices.
